The one drag about all this is that, barring Ghost Mode, I could say all of these things about 2016's Hitman. Like elusive targets, Ghost Mode is another way to engage with the clockwork of a Hitman level, cook up new schemes on the fly, and find new ways to feel like a genius.
Hitman 2 levels series#
There's also Ghost Mode, a new competitive mode that pits you against another player in the same level to try and assassinate a series of targets before the other person does-you can see them, but they have no impact on your game until they take out a target-then you have seconds to make your kill, lest the game move on to the next target and you blow your chance to score a point. You're gonna drop me in Colombia and have me take out three drug lords? For one, that's extremely original, there's much more to South America than coke, bro-for another, they're drug lords with paramilitary security guards and walled-off villas surrounded by cameras and potential witnesses. Every time I start a mission in Hitman 2, I am bewildered. That's where the whole feeling-like-an-idiot thing comes in.

It's on you to figure out how you're going to get around security, isolate your targets, quietly take them out, and escape unseen. The game's story-which is kind of nonsense, sadly-takes you to each location, tasks you with taking out a number of targets, and leaves you with little more than pocket change to get it done. Hitman 2 casts you as Agent 47, a nameless, hairless, super-spy killer-man with a list of targets that will take you to all manner of exotic locales. This will seem familiar if you played 2016's Hitman, the soft reboot that this game follows up and builds upon, because the broad strokes are the same. Hitman 2 is a puzzle game, and one of the best you'll play this year. Which sounds weird, right? It's a game about an assassin! But spend five minutes with it, and you'll realize: it's not. Hurt me.) but because it means that I have so much to learn, and Hitman 2 has so much to teach. I love it-not because I'm really into being negged (that's a lie, I'm a writer. Hitman 2 is a game that makes me feel like an idiot.
